I can't figure out a title for this poem and is it any good?

I walk silently through the autumn woods.

The sun makes the jewel leaves shimmer.

The birds watch me as they sing fall's song.

They serenade me as I pass through.

The sweet scent of fall is incredably heady.

The cool breeze feels so good it makes me shiver.

But, it sends a chilly warning of winter and to make ready

for winter.

She brings her white blanket of snow.

Then the flowers of the woods and meadow

go to sleep and never notice me with her white

caresses on the trunks of the trees.

They have lost their bright colored leaves.

Winter has her moments of breathless beauty.

I think not of her as one who has an icy soul

but one who shines up summer's gold.

I can't figure out a title for this poem and is it any good?
Ok, here goes! Actually, pretty good!

I was not 'hooked' with your opening line.

Work on that...

how about: (2nd line)

The jeweled leaves shimmer beneath the sun's bright glow

something along those lines.

drop The sun makes...

and to make ready for winter ....seems a little awkward

how about something like: "Icy whispers warn of coming witner."

Upon the ground she lays her white blanket of sonw.

Or something like: "She tucks her white blanket under the chin of the frozen ground."

Drop the word 'Then' in the line Then the flowers of the woods ... change 'go to sleep' to something like 'slumber' maybe

drop: 'with her white' to 'her alabaster hands carress the trunks of the trees' or something like that

The line:

Then the flowers of the woods and meadow

got to sleep and never notice me with her white

caresses on the trunks of the trees..'

It needs to flow a little more...it is a tiny bit awkward

If you truly wanted a critique, then that is what I have done.

Hope you realize that I am trying to be helpful and not critical.

You have a very good poem that just needs some polish.

You may consider how your experience or walking in the woods makes you feel and include that in your poem.
Reply:Autumn Gold

I like the poem. It is not pretentious. It makes me appreciate nature.

Interpret This poem: somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond by E.E. CummingsExplain literal meaning 2?

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond

any experience, your eyes have their silence:

in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,

or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look will easily unclose me

though i have closed myself as fingers,

you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens

(touching skilfully,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and

my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly,

as when the heart of this flower imagines

the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals

the power of your intense fragility:whose texture

compels me with the color of its countries,

rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes

and opens;only something in me understands

the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)

nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

1. anthropomorphism of inanimate things

2. analogy

3. contradiction

4. comparison

5. contrast

6. conflation (the voice of your eyes)

7. hyperbole

The meaning: we are all separate, yet we are all one; the "sense" of these two disparate conditions continuously fluxes.

What does this poem mean?
the auther means, that when there is love it seems neverending. and that love makes you think and be a little crazy. someone you love and be so close to you one moment and yet so far away at the next!
Reply:I think it's about a man who can't make up his mind if he loves this woman or not and the woman doesn't think she is ready to love someone.
Reply:i think it menas in some ways ur really close but in others ur really far away and hes not sure wat to do

Tonight I Can Write by Pablo Neruda

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

Write, for example,'The night is shattered

and the blue stars shiver in the distance.'

The night wind revolves in the sky and sings.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.

Through nights like this one I held her in my arms

I kissed her again and again under the endless sky.

She loved me sometimes, and I loved her too.

How could one not have loved her great still eyes.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

To think that I do not have her. To feel that I have lost her.

To hear the immense night, still more immense without her.

And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture.

What does it matter that my love could not keep her.

The night is shattered and she is not with me.

This is all. In the distance someone is singing. In the distance.

My soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

My sight searches for her as though to go to her.

My heart looks for her, and she is not with me.

The same night whitening the same trees.

We, of that time, are no longer the same.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but how I loved her.

My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing.

Another's. She will be another's. Like my kisses before.

Her voide. Her bright body. Her inifinite eyes.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but maybe I love her.

Love is so short, forgetting is so long.

Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms

my sould is not satisfied that it has lost her.

Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer

and these the last verses that I write for her.

i can't explain why i love this poem so much. it's just beautiful.

i also love:

Symptom Recital by Dorothy Parker

I do not like my state of mind;

I'm bitter, querulous, unkind.

I hate my legs, I hate my hands,

I do not yearn for lovelier lands.

I dread the dawn's recurrent light;

I hate to go to bed at night.

I snoot at simple, earnest folk.

I cannot take the gentlest joke.

I find no peace in paint or type.

My world is but a lot of tripe.

I'm disillusioned, empty-breasted.

For what I think, I'd be arrested.

I am not sick, I am not well.

My quondam dreams are shot to hell.

My soul is crushed, my spirit sore;

I do not like me any more.

I cavil, quarrel, grumble, grouse.

I ponder on the narrow house.

I shudder at the thought of men....

I'm due to fall in love again.

How do you say "frozen(ice / winter) flowers" in japanesse?

flowers covered in snow

How do you say "frozen(ice / winter) flowers" in japanesse?
if you want it in one word (but i don't think the word exhists, but still can be understood) "凍花" and its pronounced as "hyoubana" or you can also just say "凍っている花" pronounced "kootteiru hana" and actually means "a frozen flower".

good luck.

Do you see birds migrate?

I live on the migratory flight path of thousands of Canadian Geese, the Snow Goose, Finches, Sparrows and many other birds. My chickadees that leave me all summer are now back and as long as my suet and seeds last they will be here all winter.

They're gone now, but I had great show of the rubybreasted humingbird. They loved my beebalm...bright red flowers.

The snow geese in my area should start migrating and that is a site to see as well.

Do you see? Appeciate? or even notice?

Do you see birds migrate?
It is my job to notice...literally, I am an ornithologist so I keep track of when certain species arrive, when they leave etc. I do Breeding bird surveys to determine which birds have territories in which locations, they get mapped and then are compared to maps from years past and numbers of species in year past to see population trends. The main species I study is actually still here..they should be leaving any day now for S. America. I am still checking on them daily to see to exactly when they take off.
Reply:I notice the geese migrating all the time. Others are not always in big numbers so I don't really notice. I have noticed the monarch butterfly migrating south though. I really appreciate nature and notice things most people don't. That is cool you appreciate and notice the birds and thier migration patterns around you.
Reply:yes i see them migrate
Reply:I notice migration alot. I live near a swamp and see Osprey and all sorts of sea birds like terns migrate

Rhythmic bumps

Up and down

The fear of falling off is eminant

The love of staying on is magic

One after the other

Hitting the solid ground beneath

Bay, like the color of the mud

Soft fur all over

Ears perked ready for the run

Gleaming leather saddle

Soft leather reins

Legs wrapped tight

Ready? Set. Trot!

Heavy dust in the air

Whinnys in the distance

Wind whisping through the barn

Old hinged doors

Cats meowing gently

And mice scattered about

Laden with wood paneled floors

Something more is coming

Holding on tight

Right, left, ...

Falling throught the air

padded by the sand

Eye-level with four cantering shoes

Get back up and try again

Spooked no more

Fall/ Thanksgiving

Leaves from green to orange and red

Barren trees sweep softly in the wind

No one around

Everything quiet and still

From warm to cold

And flowers to snow

People inside

Laughing and talking

Sitting in chairs

Already eating

Football is on in the old living room

Cries of delight in the loud dining room

Turkey and gravy

Cranberries and cassaroles

Plates a mess with mountains of food

Silverwear strewn all over the table

Stains of red wine and other surprises

Wait a year, then do it again

Leaves from green to orange and red

Barren trees sweep softly in the wind

No one around

Everything quiet and still

From warm to cold

And flowers to snow

One more stroke... then two... then three

The crowd is cheering

Laughing and talking

You defiantly have talent.

I love what you're writing about, it's original.

You could help some of you lines flow a little better into one another.

Just a thought.

Anyway, Nice work:)

Do alot of girls still wear the kind of underwear?

I just saw my mom folding my 15 year-old sister's laundry and she still has tinkerbell, snow white, and flower underwear. Do most girls still wear these into their teen years do they eventually stop?

Do alot of girls still wear the kind of underwear?
Soooo... you're sitting around watching your mother fold your 15 year old sister's underwear. Well... isn't that something special. If you're over 12, seek help.
Reply:Well, as long as they still come in her size, lol.

But I'd try and keep lil sis innocent as long as possible. Not naive, but innocent. :-)
Reply:Maybe she just doesn't let ur mom see her other underwear i know before i started washing my own laundry, i hid all my thongs and other underwear i bought for myself. My mom would have thrown all my good stuff away.

But then again Tinkerbell is very in right now.... snow white not so much... maybe she is just a child at heart.
Reply:well dewpends..i have some..but i keep them cause they still fit. if they were too small..i would get a better one...more suitable for my age perhaps?
Reply:yes they still wear them and some may stop and wear a sexyer look some girls wear them until who knows when if you feel sexy in something why shouldnt you wear them im almost 20 and i still do sometimes theres nothing wrong with it they are cute thats all
Reply:Some girls might, but typically they probably have moved on to more solid colors and different styles of underwear. I think most girls would have grown (in size) and no longer can fit into their tinkerbell, etc underwear, which is another reason as to why most girls stop wearing it.
Reply:whats wrong with that.
Reply:i guess no
Reply:Hey! I'm 34 and i love my Garfield undies!
Reply:well i have moved on to Victoria secrets
Reply:I'm 16 and i dont know any girl that still wears those. A lot of girls start wearing thongs in like 7th grade!
Reply:Don't think that is normal. I stopped.
Reply:The real question is how old are you and why were you watching? I could also go into the question of why can't a 15 year old do her own laundry, which includes folding and putting away, espically her underwear. I can't imagine WANTING your mother to wash your underwear at 15. Some woman still wear underwear like that sometimes. Some guys find that cute. It allows the woman to look more innocent and attractive. All depends on their taste.
Reply:my 17 yr old daughter has been wearing thongs since she was about 15 which i believe is the most popular underwear of teens but there are a few movies out where grown women are wearing the type you describe so i guess to each their own
Reply:well if they like the underwear theyll keep wearing it or maybe they just dont feel like getting underwear....(no offense)

i just like my underwear
Reply:Who cares man, seems you may want a pair of super man under wear. Yahoo please put aside a site for kids questions, not all kids just certain types...
Reply:Definatly not! You should buy your sister some sexy panties! Help her out man! I wear sexy little hot pants or lacey panties or thongs depends what mood Im in... 15 is a bit old for tinkerbell and what not
Reply:well, my 12 years old sister wears them but idont, i'm 17, but sometimes there are some that looks so cute and irreristable
Reply:The real question is 'Why are you studying your 15 yr. old sister's underwear?'.
Reply:some girls try to be cute, tinkerbell is very in right now. shes americas favorite fairy!
Reply:hope not
Reply:No, it's just your sister!

She's such a baby! And I love that!!

Would like to meet her!

How can i make this poem better?

Winter Death

How beautiful is the fallen snow.

The flowers are dying and our

Rivers are freezing,

No more birds chirping their

Beautiful songs of life,

Now theirs no more sun,

Winter has killed everything.

How can i make this poem better?
How beautiful!

Snow on the branches.

Pond's frozen--

Laughing, fun.

But listen...

Birds are not singing.

Look! Flowers are not living

In the peanut sun.

Shiver...a killer's been here.
Reply:Don't worry too much about big words, just try to come up with original thoughts or a different perspective to approach.
Reply:FIRST TRY SPELLING "THEIRS" AS THERE'S...no more sun. THE Rivers are freezing sounds better than our...it makes it flow better and doesn't put the river in any one place... it could be the reader's river...making it more personal. Winter does kill but I would "soften" it by saying, "Winter has put all to sleep...awaiting Spring to awaken once more. Hence, hope springs eternal!
Reply:i think the whole poem is kind of blunt and unmoving. really i would rather try to split cinder blocks with my toes than read it again. if you're going to write a dark/morbid poem, that's one thing...you can do that. but make sure you do it right.

its too short and choppy. you need to liven and excite the reader by using descriptive words and 100 dollar words as opposed to 50 cent words.

Married men only please......?

If you work and your wife stays home, for whatever reasons, kids, health, whatever - when you are home from work and on your days off do you help around the house? If it's your home too shouldn't you want to do things there also. I do everything myself, clean, cook, laundry, cut grass (big yards), shovel snow, plant flowers and do gardening, cut trees, etc. Why is my husband so lazy after work? I see men on my street always working in the yard and they work at a job too? Do you help or do you think it's all her job. Be honest, as I am really interested and need others opinions. Thanks - 10 points to best answer.

Married men only please......?
Maybe he is depressed. Also, maybe he needs a career change. Driving all day is hard to do, even though it doesnt seem likeit. Talk to him about what bothers him before you get too upset.
Reply:I help around the house every day. My view is that the responsibilities of kids and house/yard work are both our resonsibility. Plus she's more happy when I help, which makes life easier for me.
Reply:My husband is sorta the same. we both work night shift and we'll get home sometimes he gets on the computer and is there for over an hour, I go to sleep, get up around 3, fix our lunches, get clothes together, fix supper, do the necessary house work. he gets up about 2 hours before we leave for work and does nothing except drink coffee, eat supper and is on the computer again. Plus he loves to spend money. Help with the house work is non-existant with him. Good luck with yours........
Reply:I believe that the man should help around the house.

In my household there are things that I do and I would not let my wife do them like cut grass, trees etc.

Since you are staying at home you should do more house work than him. Basically I look at the total package - work + house work. It should be about the same for both spouses. Both partners should be contributing to the family about equal amount of work, that includes house work and work work.

Your husband needs to get off is lazy a$$ and do something like a man.

Good Luck.
Reply:I work full time and my wife stays at home to cook and clean (no kids at home). I still do the lawn mowing and all repairs and fixups. Once in a while she'll mow the lawn for me while I'm at work and it's a nice suprise, but I don't expect her to do it. However in your husbands defense if I fall asleep at work at my desk nobody dies, if your hubby were to fall asleep at work, behind the wheel, many lives could be lost. Hope I have helped. God bless!
Reply:if you love your wife that go's with out saying yes I'll help my wife when ever she needs me
Reply:I love to cook and help with the cleaning and laundry. I love my wife so much I would do anything to help her. Some men go to work and when they get home they just want to veg out. And you are right he is lazy, but maybe you can do things to motivate him, if he does something around the house reward him and see if he responds.

i cant feel alot of love here......unless the husband job is hard and requires transfere from one site to a nother that makes him warnout and needs to set. ..... other wise

he must help.. the age and the helth of the husband is also involved in this inquery to be honest....... but where ever love is ... help will be on the way good luck
Reply:actually i do help out a lot .my wife has a very very part time job which she works out of our home. she also takes care of the kid so when ever i get a chance to help out, cook dinner ( which is one of my favorites because or child helps me) do the laundry what ever i can because i know no matter my job there is nothing more draining than kids. we spend some much time with her but she just has so much energy and it takes a lot out of my wife and i know this. another thing my wife and i do is compromise she doesn't mind doing laundry but hates folding them so i fold and she puts away, i like being out side so i do all that kind of stuff on my own but she does the things she specifically wants done. so far so good i hope this helps

Can you write a really COOL story that includes 6 of these lines??

This is merely good, wholesome fun on YA....That's all. Have fun.

1. Cool Hand Luke

2. Snow boots, Sneezes and ______.

3. Winter Wonderland

4. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

5. Ooooooooh.....That's SO cool, daddy-o.

6. The Winter of My Discontent

7. Ahhhhhhhh CHOOOOOOOOO !!!

8. He Has Melted My Heart

9. Cold Hands, Warm Heart

10. Goodbye Snow. Hello Flowers, Birds and _________.

11. I loooooooooong For Springtime.

12. Think Blue Skies, Sandy Beach and Plenty of SUNSHINE.

Can you write a really COOL story that includes 6 of these lines??
(7) Ahhhhhhhhhhhh CHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Oops, so sorry. Let me get that off your (2) snow boots; sneezes and coughs are the norm for me right now so I recommend not standing too close. I have had the flu for several weeks now. It is making this (6) the winter of my discontent. I had been flu free since the early 90s, but I got hit this year.

I am usually one to sing (4) Let It Snow!! Let It Snow! Let It Snow, and love to go outside and play in the (3) winter wonderland it makes. It's how I got my nickname, (1) Cool Hand Luke. But this year, I just want to say "Goodbye Snow, Hello Flowers, Birds, and Bikinis. (11) I looooooooooooong for Springtime. Maybe then I will feel better.

You'd better step back. No not there. I mean waaaaaay back. I feel another industrial strength sneeze coming on and I know you don't want any of THAT on your boots again.

Ahhhhhh.......
Reply:There was a girl named Alice, who said " goodbye snow, hello flowers, birds and bees. I'm leaving this winter wonderland, my snow boots, sneezes and Wisconsin cheese. Ahhhhhhhh Choooooooo chooooooo train I'll take down south, say goodbye to my winter of discontent. Then I'll meet up with Cool Hand Luke, move in with him and let him pay the rent.
Reply:The winter of my discontent has been here waaayy too long.. Now i can't help it.. I loooooooooooong for springtime.. i try to think blue sies, sandy beach and plenty of SUNSHINE... but then the image of his hands.. cold hands, warm heart.. He did have a warm heart only its warmth wasn't for me... :( he has cold hands but he has melted my heart.. the way m and m's melt in my mouth O_O .. and from this place of sorrow i say goodbye snow, hello flowers, birds and new tomorrow...
Reply:Cool Hand Luke Skywalker they called him. You could tell it was him from the Snow boots, Sneezes and sparkly chef's hat he had on his head.

As him and R2D2 trecked through the Winter Wonderland, they sang "let it snow! let it snow! let it snow!." or a song called "The Winter of My Discontent." One day, they were making snow angles, and R2D2 sneezed. "AAAAHHHH CHOOOOOOOO". This went unnoticed because little did they know, Cool Hand Luke Skywalker and R2D2 were on old lightsaber hill, the grave sight of the jedi master Chuckilia Norrisica. His ghost came to life before Luke and R2D2, and began shooting super-cold ice beams at them. Luke yelled, "He has melted my hart!", but the ghost replied, "You have cold hands, but a warm hart." I will let you free. "huzzah, "replied Luke. "I'm going to ireland.

Goodbye Snow. Hello Flowers, Birds, and IRELAND. "I loooooooooooong for springtime. Think blue skies, sandy beach, and plenty of sunshine R2!"

What can i do about my nose? im constantly stuffy. im so stuffy i cant breathe in or out.and if its not that?

then my nose is runny. i'd like to say its because i've lived on the westcoast all my life, but now im on the eastcoast....and the trees and flowers..snow and all...i dont know. can anyone help? i mean i dont want to drug myself up. i have a baby to take care of. and i dont like taking medicines...if you can avoid that thanks. :) love jen

What can i do about my nose? im constantly stuffy. im so stuffy i cant breathe in or out.and if its not that?
I use claratin non drowsy. It works great and you can still go about your day.
Reply:I know you don't like medicines, but it's worth a try. Singulair works quite well for me.

There medications other than pills, also. For example, there's a thing called "rhinocort". It's a prescription nasal spray, and i can tell you, it works wonders. Just spray it once a day, if you need it.

You can also buy non-medicated nasal sprays over the counter. they're water-based, im told. Helps to decongest.
Reply:check with ur ENT DR asap,u could be nose allergy or ur bronchi problem.
Reply:Dr. Oz (the Oprah doc) talked about how other cultures use neti pots for this. It may seem gross, but an audience member tried it and liked it.
Reply:Actually, I think it is because of your recent move. You're probably having some seasonal allergies to the trees and flowers you haven't been around for very long.

Sudafed, Mucinex, or Claritin are good non-drowsy over the counter allergy treatments. If you prefer not to take any medicine of any kind, you can just wait it out. Eventually, you'll probably develop a tolerance to the local plants. Or pollen season will end, one of the two.
Reply:well, i am sorry to hear that you are always stuffed up, but i take pseudafed (spelling needs work) 12 hour non-drowsy and it workks for me, there is also natural things out there too to help
Reply:Maybe severe allergies to something you don't realize, might want to get a referral to an allergist or ear/nose/throat doctor. It could be as simple as a soap you use, perfume, etc and just not using that will fix things up.
Reply:A move could cause a lot of things to make you feel like that besides the seasonal environment. There is a lot of dust in moving that could irritate you for days, as well as the past owners could have had a cat or dog that irritates you.

See an allergist or just go to a general physician doctor (you'll have to find one for youseld) anyways and tell them about moving from Cali to the East Coast. The pollen and plants are different coast to coast good luck. !
Reply:Eat some habaneros or chili peppers or check out this site , theres a Nasal spray that has Hot Peppers in it!!!http://www.sinusbuster.com/
Reply:Allergies..allergies.. I also live on the East coast and the best remedy for me is the one from CVS store (a generic brand of 24 hour clariton) Very good !
Reply:Try some raw bee pollen. The stuff you buy directly from the beekeepers. You may be able to find it at a local feedstore. My daughter had awful allergies and was miserable all the time. I had heard about using local honey and then bee pollen. It has to be locally produced so that the pollens collected are from whatever plants you're allergic to.

I got an 8oz jar for $7.99. My daughter took about a teaspoonful daily and felt better within a couple weeks. Now, a year later, she is symptom free most of the time and just takes a little when the pollen counts are really high. And we're still working on the second jar.

I have intermittent hayfever, and the bee pollen helps me, too. I don't like medications, and I can't take a lot of the OTC stuff because of my job.
Reply:hi Jen=you can get a spray at the drug store for stuffy noses and it isn't all that expensive either

I live in the Sierra mountains and it really looks like an Indian Warrior -- they are indigenous to mountain climatic zones. Also called Pedicularis densiflora. 5 hours later--after I got home from work, I checked my references and this could also be a snow plant which grows at 4,000 to 8,000 ft and blooms between May and July see: http://www.calflora.net/bloomingplants/s... I'm almost certain it's a snow plant.

Where do the old pine bark nuggets go?? every spring you have to put new ones on the flower beds.?
They decompose and help in rich the soil surrounding your plants. It is the same idea behind a compost bend. Oxygen and sunlight break these fibers down and turn them into a rich soil.
Reply:They break apart and decompose. This is a good thing. Add fresh or switch to something else like cypress mulch. Takes a bit longer to break down.
Reply:The pine bark nuggets break down and add nutrients to your garden soil...it s good thing! Don't get Cypress mulch...they cut cypress tree down JUST FOR MULCH...and it is NOT a sustainable resourse...and Cypress mulch compacts and the water runs off instead of going down to your plants...stick to the pine bark...

The love poem.

Arms that open wide,

Eyes that say "I tried",

Lips that stole sweet kisses in the snow,

Flowers in the morgue,

Lights out on the porch,

Alone with but a memory,

My hardened body,

The whipped cream in the fridge,

The love that knows no reason,

The love that has no switch,

You can't turn it on and off,

The waxing of the moon,

The eyes that smile when tears subside and comfort in the gloom.

Rate my poem?
The first three lines are brilliant. After that, the work becomes muddled and disjointed. There is no attempt at either rhyme or meter; and the allusion to whipped cream in the fridge is out of place.

My advice is to reconfigure the work using the first three lines as a base. They form perfect trochaic measures, and are very artful indeed. The combination of trochaic feet and an "A-A-B" rhyme scan is reminiscent of Tennyson at his best.

Break up the poem into a series of three line stanzas -- all written in Trochee, and with the following scans:

AAB

CCD

EEF

AAB

Work on your imagery. Avoid bizarre images like whipped cream, and stay away from mundane, overused metaphors like "waxing moons" and "eyes that smile."

If you take care of your imagery and use your first three lines as a format, you can create a superior composition. Cheers.

I need help! Will my Irises flower next year?

I live in zone 5. and I bought some (dutch and bearded) irise bulbs, that are hardy here. on the box it said to plant them from sept. to november. I planted them in sep. and today I saw they have little leaves about 4-5 inch tall. We're supposed to have a hard frost this weekend and we normally have snow by mid nov. So will they lose thier enery now and not bloom next spring?

I need help! Will my Irises flower next year?
You'll be fine. Mine do that if I cut the old leaf sets off them. After you're initial bloom next year, don't cut the leaves off, just let them dry on their own or braid them and let them dry. Mulching over the top of where they are planted is always a good idea, just rake it off in the spring or leave it for nutrient.
Reply:Yes, when the freeze comes, they'll die back but then come back again in spring.
Reply:Your irises will be fine. Those little leaves might be nipped by the frost, but the rhizome will be fine. I leave all the leaves on my irises through the winter. In the spring, I just go out and clean up those that look crappy. I've got to figure the best way to keep the huge blooms from taking a header when spring rains come. I'm thinking nails and string on the fence they're planted next to.
Reply:Not to worry, they will be fine.
Reply:They will be fine.

My neighbor is immature? -_-?

Alright, I'm not too crazy about my next door neighbor. It seems were pretty much always in conflict. I like the parents, but not the late 20's girl.

Recently she got a dog, and every morning she walks the dog, and she drinks vitaman water and when she's done she throws it on my front lawn. She also lets her dog do it's thing on my lawn and she never picks it up. We have other problems too, ones relating to seasons. Leaves, snow, flowers and pools.

The thing is, they're scottish, and everytime I say anything to her, the next morning at 5:00ish am she goes outside and starts blasting the bagpipes.

She drives me CRAZY and I want her to cut it out?

My neighbor is immature? -_-?
You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Try speaking to her and her parents first. If they do not like this encounter, try putting up those signs that remind dog walkers to take their puppies elsewhere.

At my last apartment, we had this same problem. We threw dog messes back onto the neighbor's walkway until they got the message.

Record doggie deposits with cameras for "evidence" incase it is ever needed. What she is doing is NOT legal.
Reply:file a police report with video if possible......littering %26amp; disturbing the peace is illeagal....%26amp; most comunity,s force the removal of animal excrement.
Reply:slash her tires... to let her know someone is after her.
Reply:file a police report because if she's doing something that disrupts the neighbours you have the right to file a report.

Or you could just ask her to stop (if you havn't done that already)...thats all i got.

Good Luck!
Reply:There must be a noise ordinance where you live. Contact your local police department and report the bagpipes. Is installing fencing a possibility? You could film and/or take pictures of the dog and bottle actions and take her to court if it is that serious. There must be ordinances regarding animals feces and owner responsibility for clean-up as well. Have you tried discussing the issues with the parents? They may not be aware that their darling daughter is alienating the neighbor. If you own the home, hope that she moves out soon.
Reply:o i have neighbor just like that she is a little girl and she is constantly coming over it drives me nuts i usasally make up some lame exuse to get her away if i were you i would be really peranoid too. I know how you feel trust me and my next door neighbor is pervert too she is really nasty. but i think your neighbors win the most weirdest prize.

P.S. BAGPIPES you got it harsh.
Reply:So toss the water bottle and the dog poop back on her parents lawn. Some how I don't believe the bagpipe part. But, if she blasts bagpipes in the wee hours call the police. Check with other neighbors....someone else must have heard it too. Then if need be, file a complaint.
Reply:Tell her off in front of her parents. And then, call the police when she starts bagpiping. What a ******* *****.

Snowblower hitting the flower?

I never owned or used a snowblower before. Should I let the snowblower drag on the floor, or lift it slightly off the ground? I let the snowblower drag this past weekend, and it left snow behind. It was kicking back slightly. I dont really know, can someone please explain.

Snowblower hitting the flower?
It should have little metal "sled"-like devices on both sides of the rotary auger. These devices are supposed to guide and level the snowblower. Almost always, it will remove virtually all the snow right down to the pavement. Sometimes if there is ICE or a layer of already trampled snow, the snowblower may only get down to about 1/8 inch of the ground.

As mentioned elsewhere: Double check the scraping blade!
Reply:The lower scrapping plate must be worn out.A good snow blower will not leave any snow on the driveway. It can also be used for any amount of snow.I have been in the business of snow removal for 30 years and I do not own a snow shovel.
Reply:a snow blower is really only good for 12" or more of snow. it is the movement of large amounts of snow out of the way quickly. the shovel is used for the finish work. i also use one of the long old time kitchen broom(like what the witches fly around on at Halloween) to simply sweep the snow off the sidewalk.

The snowblower should have a safety guide allowing it the rest, while moving, without the blades hitting the concrete. this mean it can be on, spinning, and you are not holding onto it. that is the lowest it will go.

You like books that give voice to those who have none.

You enjoy books that tell the story of the forgotten/invisible.

You prefer books that open your heart, as well as your eyes.

Books Like Lisa See's....?

I would recommend using www.ResortsandLodges.com. I used this recently to plan a trip of my own and found the informatin they give to be very informative. They have pictures, videos etc and the best part is you can contact the properties directly. I was able to negotiate a price with the property better than anything I found on the other sites. Just follow the map section is the easiest i found or if you know a specific property you can search for that too. Good Luck.

Has anyone read Peony In Love by Lisa See?

What did you think of it? I thought it was a great love story, and things kept happening that I never expected. I also thought it was interesting that half of the book took place after the main character was dead. Any other thoughts? I haven't talked to anyone else who has read the book. What about her other book, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I haven't read it yet. If you've read it, do you recommend it?

"book club recommendations"?

Hi,

I'm in a book club in Fairfield, CT. Our last two selections -- "The Glass Castle" and "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" -- have been good, but very downbeat. I'm looking to mix it up a little. Any suggestions for titles that are meaty enough for discussion, but not lacking in humor or hope?

Please share your thoughts.

"book club recommendations"?
You should try "Inspector Imanishi Investigates" by Seicho Matsumoto. It may sound kind of weird, but I think it would work quite nicely for a book club. Great story!
Reply:'Happiness' by Will Ferguson is quite humourous but it will also provide a lot of material for discussion.
Reply:The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. It will definitely get ya talking. I have read it 3 times now and find new things to consider each time. There are downbeat parts but for the most part it is an uplifting story about what happens when an innocent lie balloons.

The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and Little Altars Everywhere(the prequel) by Rebecca Wells are both funny. Have yet to read Ya-Ya's in Bloom.
Reply:Ome of my favorite books of the last few years is "Stiff" by Mary Roach. A nonfiction work about what happens to bodies that have been donated to science. Although it can be graphic and not to everyones taste, it is well written, with a surprising amount of humor.

Anything by David Sedaris.

The true adventures of the Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson. Will be appreciated by anyone who was a child in the 50's - mid 60's. Good sense of time and place, and again written with much humor.

Tender at the Bone by Ruth Reichl. Third in a series, chronicles her tenure as a restaurant critic for the New York Times. She developed a number of disguises to wear so she wouldn't be recognized. How she was treated, and how she felt, in each of her personas is great fodder for discussion.

Call or visit your local library. They are trained to do this sort of readers advisory and also enjoy helping.
Reply:If you haven't done it yet, The Secret Life of Bees (Sue Monk Kidd). Also Peace Like a River would be great, as would Shadow Baby (Alison McGhee).

Anything by Jodi Picoult would be good as well, as she usually writes fiction based on contemporary media issues and her writing is wonderful.
Reply:Hi,

You should all read,

"The looking glass wars", by Frank Beddor

it is the "true" story of "Alice" in wonderland.

Although judging by the tone of your question you would be after older books? (as in aimed at a older audience?)

If so Tess Gerritsen and Matthew Reilly

are both good Authors,

(my favorite are Tamora Pierce, Christopher Paolini and John Marsden (the tommorow series)

I hope (if you read one) that you enjoy it,

Bye

Anyone know of a Taro dessert recipe?

I'm currently reading, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, and am looking for a recipe that is similar to how they prepare Taro in the book. The only description it provides is that the Taro root is cut into cubes and fried?? and then topped with sugar. The sugar then caramelizes because of the heat. This dish is apparently served with cold water which you can dip the Taro cube in (causing the caramelization of the sugar). Would anyone have an actual recipe of this? I've only found one so far on the internet and am looking to see if there are variations to how this is prepared. It sounds wonderful!

Anyone know of a Taro dessert recipe?
Deep-fried sugared taro

反沙芋頭, or deep-fried sugared taro is a very famous Chiuchow (the southern part of China) fare for the sweet tooth. Overall, Chiuchow people is at the top of game when it comes to sweet in Chinese cuisine, head and shoulder above others when the subject is tong shui (糖水), or sweetened soup. It is absolutely mind-boggling to see a pan can turn out seemingly endless varieties of sweetened soup with all kinds of ingredient.

As celebrated as the sugared taro is, you won't see it often in many Chiuchow eateries outside China because of the cost-profit reality. The recipe is easy but the timing is difficult to master; unlike other desserts, this one requires the full attention of the chef in the cooking. At best, the dried sugar syrup should embrace the taro like a casing after the stir-fry, that's how the name came: fan sa, the sa, or sugar, is on the outside of the food rather than inside. The same can apply to the deep-fried sugared lily bud (反沙蓮子) and the deep-fried sugared mandarin (反沙桔子).

Ingredients:

Taro 750g

White sugar 400g

Water little

Direction:

Peel the taro. Trim the ends and sides of taro to make a rectangular block, then slice about 2 or 3 cm thick. Stack the slices and cut into sticks 2 cm wide (just a tad bigger than that of the pommes Pont Neuf).

Deep-fried with pre-heated oil to golden in color; make sure it is well-done.

Remove the taro and the oil from the wok.

Add white sugar and a little water. Cook the syrup slowly until the surface of the liquid bubbles. Add the fried taro.

Here comes the tricky part: remove the wok from the fire immediately. Switch on a fan in full gear and stir the taro in the liquid in the wind. Which way the wind blow does matter in this case: blow to the taro so the syrup can solidify during the stir-frying.

GO to the source listed below for a picture, click on it and it will show you a great enlargement of what the recipe should look like.

Good Luck!

~Kim~

Book Reccomendations Requested? Thanx.?

Just look for some book recommendations.

Please do not recommend Twighlight Series just because I have got that recommendation a bazillion times.

I prefer books written by females that have strong female characters in them. I can read general nonfiction, fantasy, and sometimes mystery.

Lately I have loved: Julia's Chocolates, Garden Spells, Plain Truth, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Crescent. Well those type of books.

Thank you in advance, going to library tomorrow and love getting reccomendations.

Good luck with finding a book! I hope these help!

Which book should I read?

I will be a freshman in high school next year. I have to read one book for summer reading. I can choose between:

ALWAYS RUNNING by Luis Rodriguez

THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT TIME by Mark Haddon

FUNNY IN FARSI by Firoozeh Dumas

THE GLASS CASTLE by Jeanette Walls

SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN by Lisa See

THE THIRTEENTH TALE by Diane Setterfield

WAY OF THE PEACEFUL WARRIOR by Dan Millman

which one should I read and why?

which ones should I not read and why?

thank you!

Which book should I read?
The Glass Castle - I had to read this for college. Awesome book and I got mine signed by the author. About a family who is basically homeless and how the children grow up to become successful adults.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night Time told through the POV of an autistic child. Quick read.

The Thirteenth Tale - This one has always caught my eye at the bookstore and I would like to read it someday.

The rest of them I've never heard of.
Reply:I haven't read any of them. My recommendation is start each, and if it hasn't hooked you by the end of the 10th page, move on to the next.

Good literature is worth reading, and something that at first might not strike you as "your thing" might, after 10 pages, have something that reaches out to you.

I might start with "Funny in Farsi," simply because of its cross-cultural elements for me.
Reply:I have read most of the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and didn't really like it, but you might.

I would get more than one of them and try them out to see what you think.
Reply:I suggest you research all of them i dont know what types of books you like however i suggest you read the first two chapters of each then if any have "hooked" you on to the storie or you enjoy read that one

Hope i helped
